Pavlovka Pinhole Fest'2024: Habitat

The festival will be held at the Hetman Museum in Kyiv from August 2 to 18, 2024
Opening August 2, 2024 at 6:00 p.m.
Festival curator Juliia Belska

So, what is this environment, Habitat, according to the participants?
Some see it as a starting point for exploring the outside world,
while others seek balance in the mosaic of experiences
and some view retirement and solitude as part of the environment of existence,
others see it as a source of experience.
For some it is a Garden of Eden, a protected place hidden from outside eyes
and for others life is at war...

In my exploration, I delve freely into the concepts of the sacred and the profane.
The theme of Habitat embodies my home, representing not only
a sanctuary of peace and intimacy but also a sacred haven,
akin to a paradisiacal retreat.

PRESS RELEASE

Ottawa, October 31 2023- From November 3 to December 12, 2023, the Centre d'artistes Voix Visuelle will host the 18th edition of its International Digital Miniprint Exhibition, curated this year by artist Doris Lamontagne. The opening of the exhibit will be held on Thursday, November 9, at 5 p.m. Presented at the gallery as well as in virtual mode on its website, the exhibition entitled Symbiosis highlights 82 works by 48 artists from the following countries: Argentina, Belgium, Canada, France, Greece, Hungary, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, and Ukraine.

Symbiosis

Since the beginning of time, artists have drawn inspiration from nature. From prehistoric works found in the Lascaux caves to medieval bestiaries, from Renaissance still life to modern times, non-human species have been represented in artistic works and by different means. This desire to evoke other species in images is driven by different intentions: whether purely aesthetic, magical, religious, or scientific, these representations lead us today to examine the impact of human beings on the planet as well as its relationship with the microbial, fungal, plant and animal agents that live there. If the thought of Descartes separated nature from humanity, the sciences of our century highlight the interdependence between different organisms including humans. The interspecies entanglements that give shape to our world are revealed to us. By understanding that humans are part of an interconnected planetary system, we can describe the various forms of relationships between the organisms of our biosphere. By revealing these entanglements that give shape to our world we can recognize our place in nature and thus put an end to our anthropocentric push towards the extinction of species and consequently that of humanity. Beyond the Anthropocene, what will nature look like? What can we expect from a planetary system that has regained its vital balance? It's up to you to imagine it.

What is digital art? In general, digital artworks are created from a computer
or use it to directly produce an aesthetic experience. Digital art is also at the heart of the mission of the
Centre d'artistes Visuelle, which wishes to honour the work of some of its members through this virtual exhibition. Curated by
Raymond Aubin, the exhibition brings together the works of Nicole Blundell, Frances Caswell-Routhier, Renée Chevalier, Monique Handfield, Hélène Lefebvre
and Richard Robesco. The works were chosen based on the quality of the aesthetic experience, the validity of the theme, the research effort and the quality of the explanatory text.

Renee Chevalier (Canada), Peter Boyadjieff (Bulgarie) & Kouki Tsuritani (Japon)

Kouki Tsuritani (Japan):
Kouki Tsuritani is a printmaker born in Tokyo, Japan in 1967. He combines the philosophy of traditional Japanese art (such as Ukiyoe, which means "Floating world") with traditional European printmaking to produce black and white mezzotints, photogravures and wood engravings. "I like the rich harmony of monochrome and think it the most sympathetic for expressing the depths of our emotions and for reflecting the inner views of people who live in a "floating" modern world. I hope that viewers of my works find them intriguing and are provoked to feel something of their lost memories." He has trained in painting and printmaking at Kanazawa College of Art, Japan, and exhibited extensively throughout Japan and in international exhibitions.
Renée Chevalier (Canada):
Born in Cap-Chat in the Gaspé Peninsula, Quebec, Canada, Renée Chevalier holds a master's degree in fine arts (painting), under the direction of the late Pierre Ayot, from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). She has had several solo and group exhibitions. According to Jean De Julio-Paquin, historian and art critic: " Renée Chevalier's digital prints are very appreciated in national and international exhibitions and contests. Her work becomes a great theatre where images are experienced in relation to the sublimated body and the world of knowledge. " Chevalier's visual research is multiform; her work is hybrid, as she explores Digital print, drawing, painting, installation, and photography. She lives in Montreal.
Peter Boyadjieff (Bulgaria):
Peter Boyadjieff is an artist born in Kazanlak, Bulgaria. He holds a Masters in Visual Arts and Design at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria (1983) with additional specialization in computer graphics, at the I.C.A.R.I. Institute in Montreal, Canada (2000). His allegorical images combine physical realism and poetic imagery in order to critically engage the viewer and convey powerful ideas in a broader cultural context. His work has been awarded many prestigious international awards, among which the First Prize at the 27e Salon du Printemps in 2012 (Canada), Highly Commended Artist award at the 8th British International Print exhibition in 2012 (UK), Gold Awards Winner in B&W Magazine in 2009 (USA), Honorary Mention at the International Art Miniature of Vieux-Lévis (Canada), First Prize and Invited Artist at the 28th Miniprint International of Cadaques in 2008 (Spain), an Honorable Mention at the 4th Muestra International de Miniprint de Rosario in 2008 (Argentina) and the 2007 Grand Prize at the 2007 International Digital Miniprint Bravo Est in Ottawa (Canada). His work has also been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe, North America, South America and Asia. He was also a featured artist for the 2015 Art Venice Biennale in the "Biennale Roadshow" (Italy), as well as a selected artist for Canada's cultural program "The Living City" at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai (China).

Jean De Julio-Paquin, historien et critique d'art.

I babble, therefore I am

Walter Benjamin foresaw it 80 years ago. Andy Warhol put it in practice 50 years ago. More recently contemporary art philosopher Yves Michaud described it in these terms: "As for producers, artists, artisans, and curators, the point is not to show master pieces but to leave one's mark, to be recognized, and to endure, including as often through the fiction of a redesigned and forged identity." It is the triumph of aestheticism. Self-exposure has stimulated the artistic community before spreading to the general population through the Facebook syndrome. A Facebook wall can be considered as a work of art. Mixing text, fixed and moving images, sound, and hyperlinks (it's multimedia!), everyone projects a made-up life on it. It's low art, of course, but it addresses the same issues as high art contemporary artists. The 12th International Digital Miniprint Exhibition invited artists to push the issue, to aestheticize their personal and ordinary life, and to convey the astonishing beauty of meaningless things. Subjects abound: selfies, daily life in its utmost banality, the superficiality of personal histories, the sensation of spectacular odysseys, and the kitsch of familiar objects. The perspective could be serious or ironic, polished or sketched, plainly factual or strangely imaginary. The key, always and everywhere, is to push oneself forward and blow one's own horn.

Walter Phillips Gallery Permanent Collection

February 11 to May 28, 2017
Walter Phillips Gallery, Main Space

The permanent collection of Walter Phillips Gallery is displayed in the spaces and hotels in which people retreat, sleep, dream, write, and make all over campus.
In 2012, artist Marie-Michelle Deschamps wrote, "The bed is the remote, deserted island where we live alone or as a duo; the hotel is the archipelago."
The works in Lloyd Hall, one of the hotels on campus, float within a parallel collection to the main collection-a furtive and rich archipelago if you will-with many acquired
in the 1980s after a series of 'artist-in-residence' exhibitions in the Walter Phillips Gallery.
The collection's initial mandate was loose, including many works that were left behind after residencies,
but since has been formalized for the commission and acquisition of works made on residence or exhibited in Walter Phillips Gallery.
Impulses documents that legacy and makes visible-in many cases for the first time-these works in chorus together inside the gallery,
alongside new texts that reimagine their context in our contemporary moment.

Renée Chevalier *A knowing glance

A free translation

Initially, a meeting which will find its meaning only much later, when the interwoven details and the artist's footsteps will lead her on to Lucretia, in a quest for the absolute transcended by her observation upon the starting point. An object that is not only an object, but a sculpture which, details recorded by the retina, absorbed to penetrate the necessary blurred beginnings of her exploration.

This is where the artist intervenes. An artist, who explores, gropes, seeks, exposes herself, looks, conceals, who illuminates, who gives life to the dead matter.

This is when death becomes beautiful in an artistic blur chosen by the photographer, just like the pearls spread out all over where the suicide scene occurred thus chosen to erase the horror, for these pearls have nothing to do with mortuary symbols. It is here also that death, which is never trivial and even less when it is chosen voluntarily, becomes other because a fly is present. Witness of the tragedy. Witness of the gaze of the artist. Silent witness to which will be assigned an outward sign of voluntary beauty. Is the fly not a false beauty spot to reveal a pale or even translucent complexion? Or is not this sculpture, just a pretext for a legend, but also the image of what it represents: the whiteness of death?

Where is the truth? Where is the false? Do we need to know, determine, weigh, or even to examine every single detail? It is a result. A series of photos where the white of purity, first incarnated by a virgin, takes their entire place. Not one white, but many whites; clear, bright, creamy, white nuances of all kinds. White like a memory blank. Because nothing is ever entirely white, or entirely true.

The gaze of Renée Chevalier lingered one day upon Lucretia, the moment of a visit to the National Museum of art of Catalonia in Barcelona. Immediately, she felt, perceived and understood that here was a story to tell, not as far off as her meeting with the Virgin of Sainte-Luce-sur-Mer statue. She knew that she had to photograph Lucretia, capture what emerged from her and create an ode to her beauty, and by using and by keeping the initial fly, reality at a standstill, as a sign of fate. This fly that records what no camera is able to capture, namely 200 images per second. Immobile, as a revealing or concealing beauty spot, depending on whose eyes will fall upon it.

The rest is no longer in the artist's hands. It belongs to everyone moved by the point of view of Renée Chevalier, who for the past 20 years, never ceasing to question herself, to reassess the scope of her gaze, recomposing elements repeatedly broken, reinventing the known, but never explored, to redo without duplication, re-appropriate the colors and the light regardless by which means and medium to do so, and with each exhibition, in its renewal and its newness, brings a unique understanding of the world in which she lives and cogitates.
